I entered a pie contest at work this week--don't get excited, I didn't win--but it was an awesome experience. At first I was nervous. No one wants to kill their colleagues. But after treasure-hunting for as close to the right ingredients as possible and trying as best I could to follow the baking instructions (a Grandma's strawberry rhubarb recipe off the Internet), I was amazed at how science took over and the baking process transformed the dough and sugar into a wonderful crust. It tasted great. (Below, I'm the one on the bottom row, left.) Though I didn't win, my co-workers commended me for its taste and feel in the mouth. Yeah, me!
